Overview

The Pontiac G5 was introduced to the United States as a 2007 model. Offered only as a coupe in the US, the G5 is based on GM's Delta platform, sharing components with the Chevrolet Cobalt, Chevrolet HHR, Saturn ION, and Saturn Astra. The G5 follows the new Pontiac styling theme visible on its sibling G6. Base and sport-themed GT trims are available. For 2009, the Pontiac G5 loses its optional engine, but its Base trim engine gets more power.

Power and performance

The 2009 Pontiac G5's new engine is meant for buyers who value fuel economy over performance. Offered only in a front engine, front-wheel drive layout, Base and GT receive a 155-hp 2.2-liter 4-cylinder engine; a 7 hp increase over the 2008 models. A 5-speed manual is standard and a 4-Speed automatic transmission is available on both trim levels. Base G5 models with the manual transmission and 15-inch wheels are called "XFE," which stands for "Xtra Fuel Economy." The XFE versions get low-rolling-resistance tires and enhancements to the drivetrain to increase fuel economy. EPA estimates fuel economy at 25 mpg in the city and 37 mpg on the highway.

Body and styling

The compact Pontiac G5 coupe offers smart styling and a good performance at a reasonable price tag. Designed for up to five occupants, the G5 comes standard with AM/FM/CD/MP3 player; digital-media connection; satellite radio; air conditioning; interior air filter; OnStar assistance system with one-year service; tilt steering wheel; cloth upholstery; front bucket seats with height-adjustable driver seat; center console; split folding rear seat with trunk pass-through; power mirrors; power windows; power door locks; remote keyless entry; variable-intermittent wipers; rear defogger; automatic headlights; and floormats. The GT adds extra features to its Base counterpart with a leather-wrapped steering wheel with radio controls; cruise control; a Pioneer sound system; and wireless cell phone link. Major Packages include My Link Package, My Spirit Package, Appearance Package, and Sun and Sound Package.

Safety Features

The Pontiac G5 has multiple safety features such as dual front airbags; front side airbags; curtain side airbags; electronic stability control (GT); traction control (GT); a tire-pressure monitor; emergency inside trunklid release; daytime running lights; dual-stage front air bags; driver and right-front passenger air bags; and head curtain side air bags. Anti-lock brakes are available as an option on the Base and are included as standard on the GT.
