Driving Impressions: Responsive in all aspects pertaining to drivability
The Sierra 1500 is available in 2WD and 4WD layouts. Both are equally capable on smooth roads. However, on slippery terrains, the 4WD offers enhanced traction to all the four wheels and reduces the risk of vehicle turn-over and skidding.
The GMC Sierra 1500 may be powered by any of the 4.3L V-6, 4.8L V-8, 5.3L V-8, or 6.0L V-8 engines, depending upon the trim level. All engines generate sufficient power, but it is the 6.0L V-8, the most robust of them all, that impresses with the delivery of 367 horsepower and excellent acceleration.
All V-8 engines strike a balance between the amount of power required and optimum fuel efficiency. Their Active Fuel Management technology uses only four cylinders in less demanding driving conditions and automatically shifts to eight cylinders, when required. The electronically controlled 4-speed automatic transmission with overdrive and tow/haul mode is also responsive and shifts smoothly.
The Sierra 1500 is maneuvered by a power rack and pinion steering, which offers crisp and prompt responses. It rides on an independent front suspension with coil-over-shock and a rear suspension with semi-elliptic 2-stage multi-leaf springs. This suspension irons out the bumps and irregularities on roads, and offers a breezy smooth ride. The Work Truck also comes equipped with a Solid Smooth Ride Suspension Package, which includes 35mm piston twin tube shocks. The SLE1, SLE2, and SLT come with a Handling/Trailering Suspension Package, including heavy-duty 46mm monotube shocks. This package is optional on the Work Truck.
The Sierra 1500 is equipped with 4-wheel anti-lock disc brakes in the front and drum brakes in the rear. These powerful brakes provide forceful stopping power to the wheels and stop the vehicle at a short distance.
A heavy-duty automatic locking rear differential is optional on the Sierra 1500. It evenly distributes power to both rear wheels in less-than-ideal traction conditions. At lower speeds, the differential automatically senses wheel spin, locks the rear axle, and transfers torque to the rear wheel with more traction, thereby helping the driver to handle slippery road conditions.
With a ground clearance of more than seven inches, the Sierra 1500 can be driven on uneven terrains quite easily, but a large turning diameter, ranging from 39.7 to 51.2 feet, makes it a little difficult to be maneuvered or parked in tight spots.
Safety: Offers five-star safety
The Sierra 1500 earned five stars, the highest possible rating, in front-impact crash tests from the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
It comes standard with dual-stage driver and right front passenger airbags with Passenger Sensing System, while head-curtain side-impact airbags with roll-over sensor at the front and rear outboard seating positions are optional on SLE1, SLE2, and SLT.
All trims also come standard with OnStar, an in-vehicle safety and security system created to help protect you and your family on the road. OnStar's innovative three-button system offers 24-hour access to expertly trained and caring advisors, a connection to emergency assistance, and access to OnStar hands-free calling.
Some other safety features standard on the Sierra 1500 include 4-wheel anti-lock brakes and a PASSkey III Plus theft-deterrent system.
Ultrasonic rear parking assist, including audible and visual warnings, is optional on SLE1, SLE2, and SLT. The Work Truck comes equipped with StabiliTrak, a stability control system with Proactive Roll Avoidance. It is optional on the other trims.
