Overview: A versatile mid-size pickup truck

The GMC Canyon is a mid-size pickup truck manufactured by General Motors. Introduced in 2004, the GMC Canyon replaced the GMC Sonoma. Based on the GMT355 platform, the 2007 GMC Canyon is available in three body-styles: 2-door Regular Cab, 4-door Extended Cab, and 4-door Crew Cab.

The Regular Cab is available in five trims: Work Truck, SL, SLE-1, SLE-2, and SLE-3; the Extended Cab is also available in five trims: Work Truck, SL, SLE-1, SLE-2, and SLT; and the Crew Cab is offered in a choice of three trims: SLE-1, SLE-2, and SLT. All trims are offered in 2-wheel drive (2WD) and 4-wheel drive (4WD) versions.

The Regular Cab models can seat a maximum of three persons, while the Extended Cab can seat up to five persons. However, the Crew Cab models come with a six-seater configuration.

The Canyon comes with a powertrain warranty for five years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first.

Engine and Performance: Two powerful engines - Pick and choose

The GMC Canyon offers a choice of two powerful engines. The Work Truck, SL, and SLE-1 trims are powered by a 2.9-liter DOHC Inline-four cylinder engine, which produces a maximum power of 185 hp and a maximum torque of 190 lb-ft. The engine is linked to a standard 5-speed manual transmission with overdrive. However, it can also be coupled with the optional electronically controlled 4-speed automatic transmission with overdrive.

The SLE-2, SLE-3, and SLT trims derive power from a 3.7-liter Inline-five cylinder engine, which churns out 242 hp and 242 lb-ft. of torque. This engine teams up with the standard electronically controlled 4-speed automatic transmission with overdrive.

Both the engines are equipped with a double overhead camshaft (DOHC) and derive fuel through multi-point fuel injection (MFI).

Walk-around: Looks distinct with an aerodynamic shape

The 2007 GMC Canyon has a jet-like aerodynamic look. With a square jaw and a broad-shouldered stance, it looks like it is gripping the road when in motion. The Regular Cab models measure 192.4 inches in length and stand on a wheelbase of 111.3 inches. The Extended Cab and Crew Cab models are 207.1 inches long, and ride on a wheelbase of 126 inches.

The front fascia of all trims is adorned by chrome bumpers, a huge grille with the bold GMC insignia in the middle, and large distinct headlamps. The SLE-3 and SLT feature standard front halogen fog lamps, which are optional on SL, SLE-1, and SLE-2. Dark smoke gray body-side moldings are optional on all trims. The SLE models and SLT come standard with power folding side mirrors, while the Work Truck, SLE, and SLE-1 feature manual fold-away side mirrors.

Intermittent front wipers, including pulse washers are standard on all trims. All trims except for the Work Truck have got a Fleetside pickup box, made of all-welded steel with double wall construction and corrosion protection. The pickup box also features four cargo tie-downs and a 2-position locking tailgate. The pickup box of Regular and Extended Cab models measures 72.8 inches in length, while that of the Crew Cab models measure 61.1 inches. The SLE-3 and SLT come standard with two frame-mounted recovery hooks in the front, which are optional on the other trims. A 2-position locking tailgate is standard on all Canyon trims. It can be lowered all the way for carrying extra-long cargo, as well as lowered partway to accommodate long cargo.

All trims, excluding the Work Truck, are available with the option of small as well as large front and rear wheel flares in body-color. With 5-speed MT, the Canyon can tow up to 2,300 pounds of cargo. The Canyon can handle a maximum payload of 1,801 pounds.

Driving Impressions: Smooth and responsive to drive

The Canyon is offered in 2WD and 4WD; the latter delivers power to the front wheels during normal driving on dry road surfaces, but if rain, snow, or mud cause front-wheel slippage, power is automatically delivered to the rear wheels as well. It provides balanced driving power across all four wheels, helping to maintain the vehicle’s agility when it is most needed.
The Canyon is equipped with either a 2.9L I-4 or a 3.7L I-5 engine, which deliver 185 hp and 242 hp respectively. Both the engines generate sufficient power and acceleration at all engine speeds. The 4-speed AT and 5-speed MT are highly responsive and shift smoothly. It is maneuvered by a power, rack-and-pinion steering, which gives crisp and precise responses under all kinds of driving conditions.

The Canyon rides on an independent front suspension with torsion bars. The 2WD models feature an independent front suspension with coil springs. Rear suspension in all the trims includes semi-floating axle with 2-stage multi-leaf springs. All trims come standard with heavy-duty Z85 suspension, which provides them with outstanding hauling capability. The Canyon is also available with the option of Z71 high-stance suspension, which empowers it to take on rough terrains. The SLE and SLT models are also offered with the option of ZQ8 sport suspension for a sporty ride. All suspension systems are modern and minimize the impact of bumps, thereby offering a smooth, pleasant ride.

The Canyon is equipped with front ventilated disc and rear drum brakes, which respond well in time and bring it to a quick halt. All 2WD trims are available with the option of electronic traction control, which helps provide controlled acceleration on slippery surfaces, such as snow, ice or wet terrains, by reducing engine power to reduce wheel spin. All 4WD trims feature standard Insta-Trac, an electronic system that lets the driver shift on the fly from 2WD to 4WD HI and back as traction conditions and vehicle speed warrant.

The Canyon is also available with optional Eaton automatic locking rear differential, which is designed to evenly distribute power to the rear wheels in slippery or rough terrains. At lower speeds, the differential automatically senses wheel spin, locks the rear axle and transfers torque to the rear wheel with more traction, greatly helping the driver’s ability to handle slippery road conditions.

The Regular Cab comes with a turning diameter of 40.7 feet, while that of the Extended and Crew Cab is 44.3 feet. With such a large turning diameter, the Canyon poses a slight problem while maneuvering or parking in tight spots.

Safety: State-of-the-art safety

The Canyon comes with a lot of state-of-the-art safety features to ensure the protection of its occupants. All its trims come standard with frontal airbags including a passenger sensing system. The option of side-impact airbags, including passenger sensing system, for the driver and right front-passenger, is available on all trims. LATCH (Lower Anchors and Top Tethers for Children) and PASSlock theft-deterrent are standard systems featured in the Canyon.

Besides these safety features, the Canyon also comes standard with OnStar one-year safe and sound service, OnStar accident assist, OnStar advanced automatic crash notification, OnStar automatic notification of air bag deployment, OnStar emergency services, OnStar ride assist, OnStar roadside assistance, OnStar stolen vehicle location assistance, and OnStar vehicle diagnostics. OnStar is an in-vehicle safety and security system created to help protect the vehicle’s passengers on the road. OnStar's innovative three-button system offers 24-hour access to expertly trained and caring advisors, a connection to emergency assistance, and access to OnStar hands-free calling.
